Covent Garden will again play host to the latest works from rising stars of the British design community as a partner of the London Design Festival 2010 (18th-26th September).
The centrepiece of the Covent Garden Design District – a collection of the most creative local talents - will be British artist Johnny Hawkes’s ‘Sphelix’, which will be located on the North Piazza. In a fitting tribute to the area’s heritage, Johnny, a future design icon, was a former stallholder in the area’s famous Apple Market - now a recognised design and craft hub for hand-made, UK produced goods. His return to the area is a fitting celebration of the area’s design credentials and its incubation of emerging talent.
Sphelix is a two-part form which seamlessly entwines to create a perfect sphere -representing the coming together of communities. It promises to entrance and delight public and design audiences alike for the duration of the London Design Festival.
Joining the Sphelix for one day only on September 18th is the innovative Chalkyvan. Fresh from a high-profile appearance at the recent Vintage at Goodwood festival, the customised vintage VW campervan’s blank panels are ready and waiting for Londoners to unleash their creativity and make their mark on the Piazza with any passing design, style-related comments and observations.
Newcastle public art project ‘Love Me Live with Me’ will also make an appearance on the Piazza on September 22nd as part of its tour across London. The ‘Love Me Live with Me’ cart will be distributing free art sourced from North-East designer markets at random to the public, encouraging them to live with their object for a week, submit their thoughts to the project’s blog and then pass the object on for someone else to enjoy. Londoners will have the chance to adopt anything from a small print project to precious glass sculptures worth over £500 each.
With stunning architecture across a Grade II-listed estate, contrasted with the regular appearance of much-lauded contemporary installations and exhibitions from the likes of Jeff Koons and Banksy, Covent Garden continues to remain a prime destination on London’s design map.
Covent Garden Brand Director Bev Churchill commented, “Covent Garden, in the heart of the West End’s cultural district, has become synonymous with architecture and design. With the addition of the world’s newest and best Apple store to our varied retail mix, we are proud of our growing reputation as a hub for design savvy shoppers.”
